This escape board, also known as an escape screen, is a chemical-free method for removing bees from honey supers before harvest. The board features a triangle-shaped, screened maze that acts as a one-way door—allowing bees to leave the honey super but preventing them from returning.
To use, place the escape board below the honey super and ensure there are no other entrances into that super. As bees leave the hive to forage, they pass through the maze and are unable to find their way back. Over the course of one to two days, the honey super becomes largely free of bees, making it easy to remove with minimal disturbance.
The escape board should not be left on longer than three days. If left in place too long, bees may learn the maze and begin returning to the honey super. When used correctly, this method is gentle, effective, and ideal for beekeepers who prefer to avoid chemicals during honey harvest.
