5-Frame Nuc | Established Nucleus Colony – Local Pickup
A 5-frame nuc (nucleus colony) is one of the strongest ways to start a new hive. Unlike package bees, a nuc already contains drawn comb, brood in multiple stages, stored honey and pollen, and a laying queen—giving your colony an immediate head start.
Our nucs are prepared locally in Ogden in partnership with experienced area beekeepers and are available by pre-order only.
Local pickup only — we do not ship nucs.
Seasonal Availability
Nucs are generally available the first weeks of May
Package bees are typically available the first weeks of April
Because nucs must build brood strength naturally in spring, they are available slightly later than packages. Exact pickup dates depend on weather and colony development.
Customers are contacted by email with confirmed pickup dates and available time slots once colonies are ready.
What Is Included in a 5-Frame Nuc?
Each nuc typically includes:
5 deep Langstroth frames
A mated, actively laying queen
Brood in multiple stages (eggs, larvae, capped brood)
Stored honey and pollen
Established worker population
Frame composition may vary slightly depending on seasonal timing and colony growth.
Why Choose a Nuc Instead of a Package?
Already established brood pattern
Drawn comb included
Faster early buildup
Reduced installation stress
Stronger start heading into summer nectar flows
A nuc allows you to transfer frames directly into your hive body in the same order and orientation, making installation simple and lower stress for both bees and beekeeper.
